According to Tzvetan Todorov’s influential essay, “The Typology of Fiction” (1966), the generic innovation which often characterises great literature is not appropriate in detective fiction where rigidity of form is intrinsic to the satisfaction the work provides.
Of course, I’d read about Todorov many times before. I’d even read a couple essays he’d written (I particularly recommend his typology of detective fiction). But I figured that it was best to see for myself what he had to say. And though in the end I was very satisfied, this book really defied my expectations.
The whodunit, according to Tzvetan Todorov, (The Poetics of Prose, pp. 44-48) has a dual nature: This type of novel contains not one but two stories: the story of the crime and the story of the investigation. In their purest form, these two stories have no point in common. .. . The first story, that of the crime, ends before the second begins.
The CfP will thus offer opportunities for delegates to engage in discussions that are relevant to both past and present crime writing. As Tzvetan Todorov argued in “The Typology of Detective Fiction,” crime fiction in many of its various sub-forms has a special relationship with the past.
